Alas, the computer market seems to be lurching towards producing little more than executive toys. Serious workstations are likely to become rarer and more expensive, and serious programs which require large screens, loads of RAM and large disks to hold the sound libraries such as Sibelius will very likely suffer as a result of all this. If you think of the display in an iMac as a very top end display you'd be spot on. There are very good monitors out there that are not in a Mac, but they aren't at the lower end of the price structure. My 2009 27' iMac has a great screen with plenty of real estate to play around in. I use the wireless keyboard much of the time when not doing things with Sibelius, but I keep a wired one hooked up when I want to use Sib and a couple other things. That said, when I replace the iMac, I'll most likely go to a Macbook Air and use an external monitor/keyboard/big HD when I use it on the desktop.

This may be a suggestion out of left field, but you might want to look at the Razer Naga (gaming!) mouse with built-in buttons arranged in a keypad-like formation. I originally got one to use with my (older) MacBook Pro, but have actually installed it on my desktop machine, even though that keyboard has a numeric keypad.
While it takes a few hours to get used to it (and you do have to do a little setup to get the keypad mapped correctly), the eventual time savings from not having to move your hand from keypad to mouse and back again makes it worth the investment, at least for me. You'd be surprised at how fast your thumb can move! I do believe there's one key short (if I recall, I don't have the. key mapped), but it actually works quite well. I vastly prefer it to the keypad. Hope this helps.

Good quality monitors for PCs can be found with a bit a research. But you have to look for a resolution of at least 1920 x 1200 (higher if you can afford it). Those resolutions are getting hard to find, but you should be able to find something (even a nice Dell) in the 24' size for around $300. As with everything else, more $$$ results in higher quality.
The Mac 27' monitors are awesome. But expensive. Go for the highest RESOLUTION you can afford. 16:9 aspect ratio). I can view two full pages side by side in Sibelius and read everything clearly. So at this time there's still no solution without multiple devices, to returning to using the now-lost keypad overlay on a Mac laptop? I now have a MacBook Air, and there's no keypad overlay. I went to the Prefs Keyboard Shortcuts Notebook (laptop) Shortcuts as suggested above, but there are no shortcuts installed for the Keypad items. To Edit that feature set only allows me to rename it or delete it. Maybe there's a keypad overlay app available.
I do not want to have to resort to using my phone or iPad in addition to the laptop, especially on a plane, where I've been reprimanded for using a bluetooth mouse. Not to mention there's so little space as it is! Posted by - 17 Feb 08:16PM. I don't understand this decision by Apple, btw. Late remark: I never order the wireless keyboard, precisely because I want an extended layout and you get that with the wired keyboard. As for the decision by Apple, I daresay it's based, in part, on the fact that Sibelius users make up, what?, 0.001% of its base?
Yes, there are other apps and users who appreciate extended, but it's still a minority. Anecdotal evidence: last time I went shopping with my wife to get her a new computer, I suggested she look at the extended keyboard (she'd previously only had experience with a rather old iBook). Take it away!! What do I do with it???
What are all those keys???? Make it go away!!!!! The salesperson put a standard wireless keyboard in front of her and, as a more gifted writer than I once remarked, all was well. Which didn't stop salesperson from looking at me as if I were an utterly heartless bastard for having made the suggestion. Extended keyboards aren't everybody's cup of tea. And Apple's decision was almost certainly based on market analysis. Posted by - 18 Feb 12:06PM.
Having used Sibelius for over 10 years on a PC I am considering getting a Mac - but how do Mac users manage without a numeric keypad on the keyboard? No one seems to have mentioned the fn key on the smaller keyboards. It provides access to ALL the keys from an extended keyboard. Nevertheless, I would go with an extended keyboard (just select it as a cost-neutral option when ordering). And a 27' display.
Don't get me started on the Mac vs. You will regret it and, if I were to express my honest opinion using an appropriately expressive vocabulary, you would not want to show it to your kids.

I stand corrected by James and Michael Casey (mostly by Michael, who 'makes it true' again:-) Since KeyRemap4MacBook has been around since 2006, the virtual extended numeric keypad is been pretty much continuously available. I've always said that a physical extended keyboard is, for most purposes, more convenient (I have a MacBook, but I almost never use it for Sibelius and I use it very little at all when I'm not on the road).
But for those who need to use a portable computer with MacOS and want to have access to the keypad, it's there.

Quality is every bit as good as any Apple-branded keyboard. Small size, never in the way and is very stingy with battery usage. Even though it's powered by AAA batteries instead of AA, I only need to replace them about every three months, and this numeric pad gets a lot of work.

February 12, 2018 This numerical keyboard is provided with a bracket so it can be attached to your alpha keyboard. This gives the look and feel of an extended keyboard with integral numeric keypad. Great idea but poorly executed. If you are left handed and attach the numerical key board to the left of your keyboard, this works great.
The on/off buttons on each keyboard are accessible. Why is this important? Turn the keyboards off and save battery power when not in use, and 2. You need to push and hold the power button to force pairing the devices with your computer (hopefully not an every day need or occurrence). A left handed orientation however, covers the battery compartment access points.

A minor irritation when renewing batteries. If you attach this numerical key board in the traditional manner (to the right of your alpha keyboard) then the on/off buttons on both keyboards are covered up and inaccessible. To turn these devices on and off or to pair these devices, the two keyboards must be disconnected from each other. I doubt the plastic bracket will stand up to daily re-attachments. Canon digital ixus 80 is drivers for mac pro.
Given the tape strips provided to 'lock' and keep the keyboards together, it is apparent they are not meant to be disconnected from each other frequently. I realize and believe both keyboards may go to sleep when not in use so battery life may not be a deal breaker. And hopefully these devices pair themselves more often than not. This left handed/right handed idiosyncrasy could have been designed out from the get go. As for me, I'll learning how to be ambidextrous.

Having this numeric keyboard at least restores my easy access to Page Up & Down as well as a Delete Forward key. With rechargeable batteries I don't have to worry about replacing AAs all the time.

This seemed like the perfect fit. It works very well, and is a good match for Apple's keyboard, both in look and in key travel.
My only complaint is the plastic connector that they supply to link the qwerty keyboard and the numeric keypad. Neither seems to fit in it perfectly; there's a small gap at either top or bottom, where the connector meets the keyboard or keypad. It's not a deal-breaker, but it drops a star from my rating of this product. I would recommend this item to a friend! Customer Videos. The one weak point is Bluetooth itself, which continues to be flaky technology. On my MacBook Pro, Bluetooth managed to lose track of the pairing after the first use. (0o) But I slogged on and got them paired again and this time it stuck. Now all I have to do is push the button on the keypad and it's instantly paired. Push it again and it's instantly unpaired and off. That's faster and easier than Apple's equivalent. The speed and accuracy of the keypad are excellent.
I'll carry this great device with me everywhere. I would recommend this item to a friend!

Now I have a new magic keyboard without the number pad. This keypad is not the same profile, so it does not couple to the magic keyboard. I knew that when I ordered it because I ask OWC, who are always helpful.
It has AAA batteries, not the AA as with the older wireless keyboard. But it fills my need including having a right delete key saving the trouble of using +. Reviewer: Anonymous Location: Suburban Washington, DC Age: 55-65 Experience Level: IT Professional Owned Product: less than a month Rating: 3/5 Works, could be better November 11, 2015 The brushed stainless and keys rock. It definitely works and provides the numeric functionality missing from Apple's bluetooth keyboard (both versions 1 and 2). It loses a star for not having an internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery and an additional star for using AAA rather than AA batteries. In addition it would be more useful to provide a green diode to indicate on / off than flashing the '=' key for a brief period.

Verified Buyer Reviewer: Anonymous Location: Clearwater, Florida Age: Over 65 Experience Level: Power User Owned Product: 1-3 months Rating: 5/5 Makes my life complete. :-) October 23, 2015 My new iMac came with he Apple Wireless Keyboard (the battery-barrel type, not the new Magic keyboard with battery recharge via Lightning), and I was at a loss without the numeric keypad of my old wired Extended Keyboard.
This gives me back my number pad and a Forward Delete key, which I sorely missed. It fits perfectly alongside the keyboard, even without the “integration bracket” that comes with it (which I’m not using).
The only con I can think of is that it’s not an EXACT color/texture match to the aluminum of the keyboard — which I no longer notice. The key layout is better than those on competing keypads, and key operation feels the same as the keyboard. I will be using Eneloop rechargeable batteries in both the number pad and the keyboard to be eco-responsible — and cheap. Not a con, but a negative, is the fact that if the white “integration bracket” is used, the on/off switches of the keyboard and the number pad are inaccessible. With my setup that doesn’t matter, but would be important if the bracket is permanently installed. NewerTech does it again.
And will probably have a new version shortly, to complement the new Magic Keyboard with battery recharge via Lightning cable. I would recommend this item to a friend! September 24, 2015 Originally I thought this was a terrible product, BUT IT'S GREAT. The problems I were experiencing are due to the numerous bugs in Yosemite's bluetooth code on a MacPro (2008). It worked great on my MacBook Pro. If you have Yosemite and are experiencing problems with your wireless keyboard (Apple) and this NewerTech Numeric Pad, upgrading to El Captain might solve all your problems, it did for me and it's already become an indispensable product.
Absolutely, Love it when using my HP 48GX application! My only suggestion is that they move the Power Button to the right side so that when you use the bracket to attach the Num pad to the Apple wireless keyboard you can shut it off without removing from bracket, should work great for left-handed people. Beautiful aluminum design & colours. Taking design cues from Apple’s iconic aluminum keyboards, the Matias Wireless Aluminum Keyboard fills a few gaps that Apple chose not to pursue. For starters, we offer it in 4 gorgeous colours —,.
Owners of the ultralight, ultrathin, can now have a Bluetooth wireless keyboard that matches its look and colour, and feels great to type on. Wireless with a number pad. If you like Apple’s wired keyboard with numeric keypad but wish it were wireless, this is the one to get. It’s just as nice. Mac-friendly function keys.
Just like an Apple keyboard, the function keys let you control screen brightness, volume, iTunes, and more. There’s even an Fn key, that lets you momentarily change the function keys back to their traditional duties, when you need them. Pairs up to 4 Bluetooth devices — Mac, iPad, iPhone, Windows, or Android. It may look like a Mac keyboard (and it is) but the Matias Wireless Aluminum Keyboard can do a few extra tricks. You can pair up to 4 Bluetooth devices, easily switching between them with the press of a button, and the keyboard adjusts its layout to match each device (as you switch) — whether it’s Mac, iPad, Windows, Android, etc. Rechargeable 1-year battery life.
No expense was spared to make this the best Bluetooth keyboard possible. That includes putting a much bigger rechargeable battery in it than we had to — 1,600 mAh. That’s 5x to 12x bigger than what’s inside most other wireless keyboards; big enough to last a year, on a single charge.
Stays connected. Other wireless keyboards will often power down and disconnect to conserve battery life — leaving you waiting, each time they reconnect. With its BIG battery, the Matias Wireless Aluminum Keyboard doesn’t need to do that. It stays on, and stays connected. These simple luxuries — not having to worry about batteries, no waiting to reconnect — make it feel more like a wired keyboard.
Hello, I was given a new Mac wireless keyboard and of course quickly discovered there is no number pad. I picked up a NewerTech wireless number pad from OWC which works very well; it's not flat like the keyboard but raised like the older Mac wireless keyboard, but not a problem for me. I did accidentally buy a different brand that did not include an equal key (?) so if any of you all are thinking about this, look closely for essential Finale keys. However, I've found that in order to use the Enter key (actually the Enter key on either the keyboard or the number pad) in Speedy to change the pitch of an existing note, you have to press the Function key (fn) first to make the Enter key work.
Hey, it's stupid, but at least it works. And like I said this is required for both the keyboard and the new number pad.
Now, for whatever reason, I am now also unable to use the Shift key to insert either notes or rests in Speedy now; it simply will not work. Command-I will put me in Insert mode but that's not the same, and certainly not the way I'm used to working. Does anyone else have this issue, and more importantly, is there a solution that I'm missing? And I will not use this thread to complain about the way the Mac wireless mouse swipe/scrolls a million measures at a time in Scroll View either. I'm not going to even bring that up here.
